Paying it forward: Kim’s story

Two years ago, Kim’s world shifted when she was laid off from a successful career at a financial institution. While the transition was unexpected, she didn’t face it alone. Having recently  connected with Pennsylvania Women Work to volunteer, Kim turned to the organization and enrolled in the New Choices program. She was eager to build new skills, make connections, and start her path forward.

“You’re never too old, and layoffs can happen at any point in life,” Kim shared. “It meant so much to be surrounded by people who understood what I was going through.”

Through New Choices, Kim learned of new career tools  to map out her next professional step and practiced interviewing to rebuild her confidence. With support from her instructor, she gained the clarity and momentum she needed to move forward.

“My New Choices instructor was so tapped into what we needed to be successful,” said Kim.

Not long after completing the program, Kim landed a new role at PNC Bank, where she continues to thrive today. True to her generous spirit, Kim didn’t just move forward, once she was settled in her new role, she returned to PA Women Work to give back.  Two years later, she remains a dedicated PA Women Work volunteer, working tirelessly to lift others, especially those navigating layoffs, and helping them rediscover their confidence, strength, and possibility.

“As a volunteer, I feel like part of the team and enjoy sharing what I’ve learned throughout my career,” said Kim. “Building connections is important, and sometimes it’s just about being there to listen to what someone is going through and figuring out how to make a connection for them, review materials, or meet to have a cup of coffee.”
