A refugee from Tanzania, Africa, Mariamo married young and quickly became a mother of three girls. Her marriage was difficult and unhealthy. Pregnant with a fourth child, she bravely decided to leave her husband and move to Pittsburgh with her three daughters to be close to family. Without any money or a job, Mariamo began to worry how she would ever support herself and her girls. She discovered Pennsylvania Women Work where she was introduced to a paid training program through UPMC. Following her training and the birth of her fourth daughter, Mariamo was hired full-time as a Patient Care Technician at UPMC Mercy Hospital – a job she never envisioned for herself. Now, she plans to continue her education and buy a house for her and her girls.
