Finding her footing in a new career: Allison’s story

Allison was looking to make a career pivot into UI/UX design, a field she felt would offer her opportunity to grow. However, a year and a half after deciding to switch careers and completing the training she needed, Allison found herself still searching for a job. “After so many rejections, you start feeling like there is something wrong with you or you aren’t doing things right,” Allison recalled.

Allison discovered PA Women Work through a LinkedIn post and signed up to gain additional support with her job search. Liz Gryger, her PWW career coach, enrolled her in New Choices where Allison learned how to advocate for herself and began rebuilding her confidence.

Liz then encouraged her to join the 3 Cups of Coffee mentorship program to learn more about the industry and expand her professional network. “My mentor, Amanda, went above and beyond,” Allison said. In addition to meeting with her and offering career and interview advice, Amanda connected her to networking events and helped her make valuable connections.

Earlier this year, Allison landed a position at Carnegie Mellon University as a Junior UI/UX Designer. She credits PA Women Work with helping her build the confidence and connections she needed to find employment. “It was so wonderful having PA Women Work to support me through my job search.”

The 3 Cups of Coffee Program is made possible by the following foundations, corporations, and  our Coffee Club – a dedicated group of more than 125 monthly donors.
