By Amber Deemer, Director, Community Engagement, Clearview Federal Credit Union Serving as the Director of Community Engagement at Clearview Federal Credit Union, and on a personal level, I've observed and experienced the profound effect of investing time, talents, and treasure in organizations like Pennsylvania Women Work. Getting involved with community organizations and causes exposes us to the needs of our neighbors and provides opportunities to give back in meaningful ways. In fact, lending time to local organizations and efforts is a powerful way to enhance our mental and overall well-being. Numerous studies have shown that volunteering on a regular basis decreases levels of stress and anxiety. To put it simply, when we give our time through volunteer programs like 3 Cups of Coffee (PA Women Work’s mentoring program), it simply feels GOOD. And when we’re doing good things, it boosts our mood, decreases stress levels and ultimately makes us happier and more content both at work and in our personal lives. Above that, volunteering provides a sense of purpose often missing in our daily routines or jobs, connecting us with deeper values and passions. If a company or organization offers ways to get involved in the community, it can drive greater enthusiasm and commitment from employees and foster a stronger sense of belonging and loyalty to organizations. Opportunities to engage in community service also offer a refreshing break from routine tasks, re-energizing our enthusiasm at work. The skills and experiences gained, such as teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership, can be transferred to our professional roles, resulting in more effective and innovative employees. Giving back can indeed have profound positive effects on mental health, purpose, and work motivation. Here are action steps you can take to incorporate giving into your life: Identify causes: Reflect on causes or issues that resonate with you personally. Research organizations: Look for local organizations that align with your passions. Research their missions, projects, and impact to find ones that you believe in and trust. Volunteer: Offer your time and skills to volunteer with these organizations. Whether it's through direct service, administrative tasks, or special projects. Donate: If you have the means, consider donating. If you find it challenging to volunteer your time regularly, which is valued at $33.49 an hour, consider contributing financially to support the causes you care about. I have seen incredible impact when I commit to monthly donations to organizations, such as PA Women Work’s monthly giving club. No matter the amount, this financial support is another powerful way to give back and boost your mental health. Start small: If you're new to giving back, start with small, manageable actions. For example, volunteer for a few hours a month or make a modest donation to a charity you support. Share your skills: Offer your expertise to organizations in need. If you're skilled in areas like marketing, design, IT, human resources or finance, your pro bono services can be invaluable to nonprofits. Spread awareness: Use your voice and platform to raise awareness about important issues and events for organizations you care about. Share relevant articles, resources, or personal stories on social media to inspire others to get involved. Commit: Stay consistent in your efforts, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. Remember that every small action counts toward creating positive change in the world. Whether through organized workplace initiatives or individual efforts, giving back of your time, talents, or treasure to causes you care about will not only make a difference in the lives of others but also enrich your own life along the way.
